There is an article in June 2004 Scientific American about stem cell research. It contains information on the mechanics of stem cells, research funding issues, and the political/ethical controversy. The editors also (in the introductory column) make a case for boosting American involvement in the research.
If you have never read Sci Am, most articles are written so that anyone can understand them. There are generally lots of photographs and illustrations and they are very good about walking readers through processes. This article is no exception; a beginner to the topic of stem cells will understand much more after reading it.
