Amanda: Before I was diagnosed with AA, I was given 4 days of IVIG to attempt to boost my platelets. It was unsuccessful. I was told that a response to IVIG can take up to 6 weeks. IVIG is typically used to treat people with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), an autoimmune disorder that destroys platelets. In terms of your son's platelets, even though he still requires platelet transfusions, does he need transfusions less often than he did before ATG? If so, this could indicate recovery. My understanding is that of the three cell lines, platelets are often the last cell line to respond and when they do, they are the most likely cell line to fail to return to "normal". (But all that we need is to be able to hold at 50K or more!) Hope this helps–good luck.
